The Birth of a Legacy (Late 16th Century)
The history of Satsuma Ware began in 1598, when the Lord of the Satsuma Domain (modern-day Kagoshima), Yoshihiro Shimazu, brought highly skilled potters from the Korean Peninsula to Japan. These artisans settled in Kagoshima, discovering unique local clays and setting up kilns that established the foundation of Satsuma Ware.

The Tale of Two Styles: White and Black
Over the centuries, the craft split into two distinctive styles based on their purpose and design:

-White Satsuma (Shiromon): Created for the ruling samurai class and feudal lords. It features a beautiful cream-colored glaze, intricate crackle patterns, and lavish gold painted designs.

-Black Satsuma (Kuromon): Developed as durable, rustic tableware for everyday citizens. Made from iron-rich dark soil, it is famous for its warm, earthy textures and traditional sake/shochu warmers.

Captivating the World (The 19th Century "SATSUMA" Boom)
In 1867, Satsuma Ware made a historic appearance at the Paris International Exposition. The exquisite, gold-painted masterpieces fascinated European society, sparking a massive global phenomenon known simply as "SATSUMA." It became a highly sought-after symbol of Japanese luxury across the West.

Satsuma Ware Today
Today, the 400-year-old tradition is proudly kept alive by dedicated master artisans in Kagoshima. While preserving ancient techniques, modern kilns continue to innovate, crafting timeless White and Black Satsuma pieces that blend rich heritage with contemporary living.
